"In Zen Buddhism of Japan, a Kôan is a story, question, or statement used in meditation for novices. A Kôan is intended to provoke reflection on the inadequacy of logical reasoning, leading one to abandon ultimate dependence on reason and gain intuitive enlightenment. The continuous pondering of the first, or break-through Kôan leads to an initial insight, called Kensho. After that initial insight, students continue their practice investigating subsequent Kôans."
