"Heron Lake Vineyard" Wild Horse Valley
“Heron Lake Vineyard” is just 5 miles from Back Room Wines as the crow flies. Tucked away in the hills southeast of Napa, it's truly off the beaten path. Cool climate & rocky, well drained soils make ideal conditions for Pinot Noir. Just released 2014 vintage (as of spring ’17). Grace and intensity combine in this aromatic, juicy, perfumed Pinot. Get wild cherries, rosewater, talc, dried ginger. Shining acidity, modest tannins. Blossoms with a short decant.
From March 29, 2017 Newsletter:
"Heron Lake Vineyard" is four miles east, as the crow flies, from Back Room Wines, but it takes 20 minutes and permitted access to get there by car. Carneros & Petaluma Gap cool air shoots from the west, and the rocky, volcanic soils stress the sustainably farmed vines just so. The result is a "Burgundian" Pinot Noir of the most flattering nature. Bright and beautiful wild cherries, red plums and fresh raspberries. Red rose/talc/ginger tea perfume. Acidity that elevates the flavors an extra level (or two). And an ability to improve with time in bottle, or the decanter.
We re-tasted the new 2014 Miss Olivia with owner/winemaker David Mahaffey yesterday and confirmed our opinion. This is outstanding.
It's one to enjoy now and for the next 5+ years. All the fruit, floral and spice flavors mentioned above are lightly framed by French oak. As it opens up, the flavors get deeper and the finish gets longer. Just five minutes of swirling changes its personality from coy to outgoing. Give it a couple more hours of air and you have a budding rock star.
