Varner-Pinot Noir-"Spring Ridge Vineyard-Picnic Block" Santa Cruz Mountains-2013

Pinot Noir
"Spring Ridge Vineyard-Picnic Block" Santa Cruz Mountains

Santa Cruz Mountains vineyard 10 miles from the Pacific. Brothers Jim and Bob Varner make some of California’s best Burgundy varietals. Their Pinots are balanced, rich, distinctive & for what you get,  GREAT VALUES. PICNIC BLOCK: Varner’s most “spicy & meaty” Pinot.  Smell and taste sweet red plums, wild cherries, cinnamon/nutmeg, amaro, anise, raspberries. Uplifting, cool-climate acidity elevates the flavors. Opens up over 2 hours. 233 cases made.
From the winery: 2-3% whole clusters, 5 day cool soak, hand punchdown. Indigenous yeast, pressed at dryness, 2 months in tank followed by 12 months in barrel without racking. Hand-racked using an esquive and hand-cranked barrel tilting device, unfined & unfiltered.

Galloni, Vinous, July 2016: "Sweet dark cherry, menthol, pine, licorice and dark spices are all infused in the 2013 Pinot Noir Picnic Block. Deep and ample on the palate, the Picnic shows the more virile, masculine side of Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir. This is an especially dense, meaty Pinot Noir. Graphite, black pepper, game, smoke and scorched earth add the closing shades of nuance. The chewy tannins will benefit from time in bottle to soften. This is an especially big, ample Pinot from the Varners."
