The Archive-Malbec-Napa Valley-2014

The Archive
Napa Valley

The Archive is RELIC winery’s “one off” label. I.e. they may only make one vintage of the particular wine. This Malbec is a WOW wine. Wow for its deep color, strong nose, full flavor and long, tasty finish. Grapes come from the Western hillsides of Oakville. It’s steep, east facing, and mostly shale. Get boysenberries, blueberries, allspice, mint, amaro, espresso. 18% Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc. 105 cases made.

From the Western side of Napa Valley, on steep slopes of shale, high above Oakville, comes this Malbec from Relic Winery's "The Archive" project. The Archive is their "one off" label, wines of special character and distinction that they may only release once. We're fans of The Archive because the wines are always fun, interesting, and delicious. We love the squat 750 ml bottles, too.

This is classic Malbec: dark and intense, with flavors of ripe blueberries, plums, and dark chocolate. Smooth tannins, mild acid and a nice, long finish of exotic spices and mocha. With an hour decant the fruit remains front and center, but complementary flavors of leather and amaro are amplified and more distinct.

With Spring breaking out (in Napa at least), it's time to dust off the grill and serve this with some grilled meats and veggies! Only 105 cases made.
