"Gary Morisoli Vineyard" Rutherford, Napa Valley
From Back Room's "Cab Alert"
on January 26, 2017:
Michael Trujillo, long-time, high-end Napa Cabernet winemaker. In addition to Trujillo, he is President/Director of Winemaker at Sequoia Grove and makes Herb Lamb Vineyard wines. The Trujillo wines are a veritable drop in the bucket for sheer volume. There is a wealth of skill, experience and passion applied to every bottle of Trujillo Cabernet.
"Gary Morisoli Vineyard" is on the Rutherford Bench. It is heaven for growing Cabernet. Sunny, clear skies from dusk to dawn during the growing season allow for easy, complete, perfect ripening. East-facing slope, catching the morning sun then evening shade, explains the "not too ripe" character. Briar, bit of liqueur, not jam.
This is a Cabernet for the cellar. With coaxing (i.e. lots of time, lots of swirling), the aromas and flavors expand. Get summer-picked mulberries, baker's chocolate, cigar wrapper, hot roast beef, pencil shavings, black olives, black raspberries and cherries. Fruit and earth go hand in hand here, like a very good Bordeaux. And like a very good Bordeaux, this wine should be cellared for 5-10 years (on the conservative side). That said, I am enjoying a glass of it as I write this. It has stretched for 10 hours and I'm diggin' it. Can still sense it will get better with time, but if one must drink, so be it.
If you buy, you'll likely be the only one on your block to own this. Just 71 cases made! That's it. Only sold in California, and very few places have it. Back Room Wines has 3 cases available.
