Ziata-Pinot Noir-Carneros, Napa Valley-2009

Pinot Noir
Carneros, Napa Valley

Napa Vintner Karen Cakebread honors her mother in naming her tiny-production winery
(her Mother’s middle name is Annunziata). This single-vineyard Pinot Noir starts out with a pretty nose of dark cherries, red roses, cola and allspice. Burst of wild red fruits in the mouth with spice and a little toasty oak. Good acidity and nice tannins. On the “bigger” side of Pinot Noir. 300 cases made.
This is a Back Room Wines Rising Wine Star

From March 6, 2013 newsletter:

This was an easy choice for a Special Delivery because Karen always makes her own deliveries ("Keeps me in touch with my customers, and I can say thank  you," she says.") She started Ziata in 2008 and released her first wine, a Sauvignon Blanc, in 2009. (We like and sell the 2011 Ziata Sauv Blanc now) Her winemaker is Anne Vawter, a talented winemaker who learned her craft under the tutelage of Heidi Barrett.

What, or who, is Ziata? Karen's mother's and grandmother's middle name is AnnunZIATA. (They are from Campania, near Naples). Karen's mom also lives in Napa Valley and often keeps Karen company as she dries up and down the valley making deliveries and checking out vineyards.

The Ziata Pinot Noir is big, powerful wine that asks for 60 minute decanting for best enjoyment. Most of our featured wines give immediate satisfaction: pop the bottle, pour it, drink it, love it. The Ziata Pinot is different.

Pop the cork, pour a glass, and you'll quickly understand the definition of "tight" if you don't know it already.
It's powerful, structured, serious and brooding. I highly recommend you pour into a decanter, swoosh it around every ten minutes for an hour, then imbibe.

Here are my notes after a one hour decant: nose of dark cherries, red roses, cola and allspice. Burst of wild red fruits in the mouth with more dark Pinot spice and a dollop of toasty oak complementing the ample dark, wild cherry fruit. Good acidity and a battalion of fine tannins tell me this will cellar like a champ.

Food suggestions? Tea-smoked duck, grilled polenta with sauteed mushrooms, roast ham and scallop potatoes. Only 300 cases made.
