Cab-Alert Newsletter, March 15, 2016:
John Giannini moved from fine restaurant kitchens to the wine cellar in 2006. From Chef at the great Terra Restaurant in St Helena to Outpost Winery and its many clients' wines, John knows how make anything taste good, I suspect. He's the assistant winemaker under Thomas Rivers Brown at Outpost and makes his wine, Cresta Velia, there.
It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from "Eagle Summit Vineyard" on Howell Mountain. 2010 was the first vintage - you may have enjoyed the 2012 as I loved and recommended it as well. I JUST tasted the 2013 last night (if you're in Napa, we're pouring it in the wine bar for the next few days - come check it out).
Pours out of the bottle purple-black. First whiff features sweet toasty barrel (80% new toasty barrels) that in 2 minutes evolves to blackberry liqueur, cassis, anise, black truffle, cocoa/mocha, nutmeg. Let the wine stretch to enjoy all its layers of flavor (and let the wine blossom & tannins soften). It is so tasty now, no doubt much of the '13 Cresta Velia will be consumed sooner than later. Best drinking, however, will be 2020-2025 in my opinion. 156 cases made (and we have 6 of them to sell).
