Clos du Clocher-Pomerol-2010

Clos du Clocher

70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc. Clay, gravel and sand soils (typical of great Pomerol). Mature, 25 year old vines on average (the Estate started in 1924). Aged in about 60% new French oak. Great 2010 vintage. This is big Bordeaux, showing loads of deep, dark blackberry/currant, violet, mineral and dried herb smells and flavors. Thick coat of fine tannins on the gums and rooftop. Hour decant a must. Better to cellar until 2025.

Importer notes:
Inside the bottle: It is very difficult to deny this wine's charm. Despite its sheer power and intensity, it can be a bit of a shy beast. The wine is deeply laced with nuances of perfectly farmed and selected Merlot grapes, which give it's core of dark fruits and beautiful lavender and violet flowers. Somehow the wine's complexity manages to extend its range of characters across France's Massive Central to grab a piece of Cote Rotie's wild and mineral-laced, molten iron and wild berry fruits adorned with “garrigue.” Indeed, the young wine first enters the glass with the smell of its aging vessel but wastes no time moving on to more interesting and pure vinous characters. My favorite thing about this wine, and many wines, is its discretion. The Cabernet Franc, which makes up 30% of the wine, brings with it very good table-side manners that manage to keep the ego and attention-grabbing Merlot firmly planted in its seat, leaving plenty of room for other non-wine related discussions at the dinner table.
