Carneros, Napa Valley
Lee Hudson’s Carneros Estate makes myriad wines well. For quality, character and deliciousness, the Syrah is the shop’s favorite. Smell and taste blueberry compote, mocha, black olive, black pepper, mole sauce. It’s lush, full-flavored, med/low acidity, smooth texture, and just so so good. Have this instead of Napa Cab of equal price sometime. It’s good to mix things up a little.
From August 3, 2016 (non) Cab Alert:
Lee Hudson bought 2000 acres in Carneros, Napa side, in 1980. Of the 2000, 200 acres are planted to myriad grapes, most notably Chardonnay (if you want one of California's best Chardonnays, check out the Hudson 2013. For what you get, it's priced at a song: $65.)
You won't see Hudson Syrah around very often. There's not much made (just five barrels: 120 cases), and, regardless of how smoking-good it is, high end Syrah is not for everybody. As you are a reader of my Cab Alert, I'm assuming you like rich, complex, bold-flavored Napa Valley reds (Cabs #1).
If $90/bottle is in your price comfort zone, then this wine is indeed for you.
Smell and taste blueberry compote, mocha, black olive, black pepper, mole sauce. It's lush, full-flavored, med/low acidity, smooth texture, and just so, so good. Robert Parker calls it Cote-Rotie like. While I see what he means, to me the California sunshine makes it more New World than Old World in style.
And drinking great now. Enjoy this month, this year, next year, next decade. Open this instead of, or next to, your next Napa Cab. It's good to mix things up a little.
And extremely versatile with food. We drank it at Hudson Ranch with an intensely flavored chicken stew with aromatic vegetables and garden herbs (I should remember the dish better than I do) and it was great. Red meats, of course, are a natural. And anything with bacon. And just about anything from the grill.
