Napa Valley Red Wine
80% Cabernet Sauvignon ("Hendry Vineyard" base of Mt Veeder), 20% Cabernet Franc ("Detert Vineyard" Oakville). Geneviève and Luc Janssens, "garagistes." They make 8 barrels, roughly 200 cases, of Portfolio each vintage.
We tasted with Geneviève last night (January 18, 2016) and then she left us the bottle to try later. I'm tasting it now, the next day. I should spit, but it's too good. Aged in all new French oak for 30 months, but you wouldn't know it as the oak is completely integrated into the wine.
Classy red, capturing the richness of Napa Cab while embracing the the savory qualities and acidity of 2011.
Last night, bottle just opened, I got bay leaf, sage, cedar, cassis and blueberry/wild dark cherry.
Today, now that it has "opened up," I taste fresh blueberry, cedar, pomegranate, roast coffee, tamarind and black truffle. The best 2011 Napa Cabernets, of which this is one, work with Mother Nature to make a wine of balance, elegance and intensity. These qualities point to a long evolution. Less than 200 cases made.
